Twenty-first-century challenges in regional climate modeling

Research on regional climate modeling has remarkably expanded during the last few years in terms of the research groups, the sophistication of regional climate models and the number of new studies. Not least, the models used by the community are refined with additional complexity and resolution, which promotes new insights. The Third International Lund Regional-scale Climate Modelling Workshop reviewed general and specific developments in regional climate modeling, focusing on regional climate system models, very-high resolution models, model evaluation and application and regional climate model ensembles, as well as considered both the needs and possibilities to further advances in the area. Further coordination across the community is a useful development, as well as continued interaction with both end-users and global climate modeling efforts.
