Basic Information

While the BSSC acknowledged the importance of the long-term effects of climate change, it focused on short- to medium-term threats to birds. Hence, the recommendation was made to extend the ranking system to include the impacts of climate change on California's native birds.

Working with CDFG, Point Blue Conservation Science, in collaboration with a Technical Advisory Committee, developed an objective system to rank California's at-risk birds. This system and associated results, species-specific accounts, and recommendations were published in 2008 as a monograph California Bird Species of Special Concern: A Ranked Assessment of Species, Subspecies, and Distinct Populations of Birds of Immediate Conservation Concern in California.

The resulting list will serve as an early warning system to guide managers in adopting a longer-term approach to conservation.
