Raster Grids

Many of the dataset variables in the Climate Commons are available in GIS rasters based on standard grids. This allows the GIS user to more easily overlay multiple rasters, or to use raster calculations on aligned cells.

All Commons-hosted datasets will be available in one or more standard grids. Non-hosted datasets may or may not be available in these standard grids.

In order to be compatible, a raster must share the same datum and projection, and cell size. It must also be aligned to the same boundaries so the cells overlap exactly.

See this comparison of three different grid resolutions: http://climate.calcommons.org/article/about-raster-resolutions
